What is the difference between HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.4?
This is a question that comes up a lot. There is still a lot of confusion about the difference between HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.4. What improvements does HDMI 1.4 have compared to 1.3?
HDMI 1.4 offers more possibilities than HDMI 1.3. One of these possibilities is receiving and sending network data at a speed of 100Mbps. In addition, 3D images can now also be sent from, for example, a Blu-Ray player to your screen. But these are just a few of the many improvements that have been implemented. RU connected has made an overview below of all the improvements that HDMI 1.4 now offers.
Network support
In the HDMI 1.4 version, an extra data channel for Ethernet has been added. This means that HD video, HD audio and Ethernet are integrated into one cable. This means that the Ethernet Channel enables various IP services with a speed of 100MBPs. This means that a separate Ethernet cable is no longer required to connect to a network. The cables that support this are officially called HDMI high speed with ethernet.
Audio Return Channel
This HDMI version brings many changes in the field of audio. It is no longer necessary to connect a separate audio cable via a receiver to the speakers. HDMI 1.4 can send audio signals back to a receiver to play the sound, without the need for an extra audio cable. With HDMI 1.3 it was still necessary to use a separate cable for the audio. This is no longer necessary.
Higher resolution
With HDMI 1.4 it is now possible to send video images with a higher resolution than in version 1.3. HDMI version 1.3 is limited to a resolution of 1080P and 1080i, but HDMI 1.4 can achieve a resolution of up to 4096 x 2160. This is 4 times as much as is currently possible. This resolution is also called Ultra HD
3D support
In the new version of HDMI, support for 3D technology has been improved. This applies to Blu-Ray, but also to the latest games. Support for various broadcast formats that contain 3D has also been added to HDMI 1.4. This means that you can also watch television channels that broadcast 3D images in 3D, for example.
Speed
HDMI 1.4 has been given more lane width to be able to pass resolutions such as Ultra HD and 3D signals. This means that the HDMI cables have become faster. The new standard is a speed of 10.2 Gbit/s. This is much faster than the older version.
Deep Color support
HDMI 1.4 ensures that you see better color depths. This makes digital photos look better and more realistic. Support for color spaces that have been specially developed for digital cameras has also been added. Some examples are Adobe RGB, sYCC601 and AdobeYCC601.
